Resources for
Mennonite Women Sunday
The third annual Mennonite Women Sunday was held April 18, 2004,
in Ohio Conference. Worship materials on the theme, “Season of Awakening,”
were distributed by Ohio Mennonite Women to highlight the many diverse
activities of women—not just women in groups, explains Ohio MW president
Nancy Roynon. “We have encouraged various things: having a woman be the
worship leader or speaker, sharing what women’s groups are doing, displaying
what they do, and recognizing women’s gifts in other ways.”
Tedrow Mennonite Church planned a Women’s Day service on May 9.
“It was a good way to celebrate Mother’s Day without being exclusive to
women who are not mothers,” says associate pastor Pam Short. The service
included the collection of school kit items and a blessing for women. Pam also
wrote new lyrics for the hymn, “Be Thou My Vision.”
For 2003, Elaine Sommers Rich wrote a litany that mentions several prominent women from Ohio
Conference. It could easily be adapted to list women missionaries, teachers,
and leaders from your own region.
A 2002 litany
talks about the many different kinds of women that make up Mennonite Women
USA; all are welcome!
Be Thou Our Vision
Based on Isaiah 58:1-12; words to last three stanzas written by Pamela
Short
(Music found in Hymnal: A Worship Book 545)
ALL SING:
Be Thou our vision, O LORD of our hearts;
Naught be all else to us save as Thou art.
Thou our best thought, by day or by night,
Waking and sleeping, Thy presence our light.
MEN SING:
Jesus, O bless these, our women of God;
Break through their darkness and bring them Your dawn.
Heal their sad spirits, Your light in them rise;
Guard them in Glory; awake to their cries.
WOMEN SING:
Water our gardens with Your Gentle Grace;
Strengthen our bones and build up our faith;
Raise us to feed and to care for the poor;
Rebuild our homes; with Your Mercy restore.
ALL SING:
Be Thou our vision, Your people renew;
Bonds of injustice we shall break through;
Yokes of oppression O help us to free!
God of Great Glory Your Spirit we’ll see.
