The Greatest Story Ever Told
"My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant." Luke 1:47-48
"She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name of JESUS, because he will save his people from their sins." Matthew 1:21
"To you is born this day in the city of David a Savior who is the Messiah, the Lord." Luke 2:11
These words remind us of the hope and joy we have in Christ's birth.

MW Staff Retreat
In November the staff of Mennonite Women USA spent a day in retreat in Wichita, KS. Sister Mary Ellen Loch, our retreat guide, invited us to meditate on scripture about Mary, the mother of Jesus, and Mary Magdalene.
These moments of reflection on women from the Bible were followed by an examination of our personality characteristics and leadership styles. We reflected on our individual gifts and how to continue developing as a team, complementing each other's strengths and areas of growth.
As we celebrate this season, we (the staff) give thanks for the blessings God has given us. We invite you to join us in eagerly looking forward to the surprises God is waiting to reveal to us in the New Year.
Merry Christmas from Patty, Lois, Berni, Ruth and Rhoda!

Coming In timbrel

"My aunts, cousins and grandmothers were not the "brow-beaten" Amish women the media often portray. They were independent women who worked hard, loved their families, and enjoyed life," says Marty Lehman in her article in the January/February 2012 issue of timbrel. Lehman tells of her "amazing journey" from being an Amish girl to becoming one of today's leaders of Mennonite Church USA.
Jayne Byler, lead pastor of First Mennonite Church, Sugarcreek Ohio, tells her story of becoming a more seasoned and mature pastor over the years as she "becomes what" she is.
Don't miss this interesting issue of timbrel which focuses on Women in Leadership.
In preparation for the March/April issue of timbrel, consider:
What characteristics in other women cause them to inspire you?
Send your responses to Patty by December 31. Be sure to include your name and hometown. |
Don't forget to add timbrel to your Christmas shopping list. It's a gift that gives all year long. To subscribe to timbrel, send $15 for one year or $13 per person for a group of 10 or more to Mennonite Women USA, 718 N Main St., Newton, KS 67114. Sister Care in Kansas
The electricity of a college campus, the splendor of the changing colors of autumn and the kiss of crisp air greeted 80 women who attended Sister Care November 11-12, 2011at Hesston Mennonite Church. Women from three states gathered to be challenged, comforted and empowered to provide care to themselves and their sisters.
"As I have lived into Sister Care, I have been amazed at how many times I have referenced something in conversations, and how much it has influenced my thinking. In my desire to be more of a Compassionate Listener, I appreciated the example of the power of speaking truth to those internal lies we all carry with us.
"The handles I was given at Sister Care have been, and continue to be incredibly helpful and I want to share these with the small group of women I am journeying with." Elena Entz, Newton, Kansas
Another attendee shares, "Most meaningful to me at Sister Care was to recognize and name my symptoms of compassion fatigue and to learn techniques to help sisters work with their stories in healing ways. I felt empowered that I can be a good listener and help make a difference. I also felt empowered to exercise tools to say no and state limits and hopefully help others who are stuck. This is such an important ministry." |

The Kitchen Table
by Lorraine Eby
Franklin Conference Sister Care Coordinator
Burning Bush, December 2011
The Biblical stories of Mary and Elizabeth tell the journeys of two women, one very young and one much older, sharing a similar experience. They each conceived through super-natural causes and the birth was foretold by Gabriel, a messenger from God. But how they responded to the announcement was handled very differently.

Model and Mother? The place of Mary for Mennonites by Laurie Oswald Robinson
The Mennonite - December 2011
I stalked the hallways of the Anglican church nervously as I waited for the healing prayer conference to begin. I had come to do some soul work on inner wounds, and I felt uncertain about what was to unfold. As I veered into a corridor off the beaten path from the registration tables, I was drawn to a giant Renaissance painting of the toddler Jesus in the arms of his mother, Mary.

An Advent Prayer
Lois Johns Kaufmann, Central District Conference Minister
Holy One,
You surprise us with your invitations;
you amaze us with your trust in us,
bidding us, like Mary, to believe your promises,
calling us to nourish and cradle your life within us.
Like Mary, help us to audaciously trust you,
to patiently go on living in the questions and quandaries,
grounded in the stories of your people,
heads held high in your desire for justice, equality, shalom.
Grant us sure-footedness on our Advent journey
that we may join hands in the hard and holy venture of
receiving your reign in our human family.
In the name of the Incarnate One,
Amen.
