The Mennonite, August 2010
by Rhonda Miller
"Haitian brothers and sisters have much to teach us about faith, generosity, gratefulness, grace and Easter.
Three months after the earthquake, Haitians were still sleeping in tents. The Haitian government hadn't yet given permission for people to begin rebuilding, and even when it did, Haitians were afraid of another earthquake and too frightened to sleep indoors.
Part of my work with Mennonite Central Committee was as chauffeur and translator for American engineers that had come at MCC's request to help assess the safety of buildings ... Read more.
Rhonda Miller is a member of First Mennonite Church of Iowa City. She and her husband lived in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, as Mennonite Central Committee volunteers from 1995 to 1998. They returned to Haiti March 14-27 to assist MCC with its work after the earthquake.

A Prayer for the Journey
By Carol Duerksen
Goessel, Kansas
My personal version of the Lord's Prayer:
God,
Show me yourself.
Show me how you are in control of the world
Because it's not looking very good right now.
Show me that somehow your purposes are being worked out
Because, to be honest, it just isn't very obvious.
Thanks for providing me with food.
Help me to make wise choices in feeding my body.
Forgive me
For being more interested in being forgiven
Than in forgiving others.
Keep me from the damage I can do to myself
And the violence the forces of evil can bring upon me.
You are Lord of all
In all
Through all,
And I am in awe.
-from the devotional book Now It Springs Up by Carol Duerksen, Michele Hershberger, and Laurie Oswald Robinson. Ordering information.
(Psalm 139, Isaiah 54:17, John 15:16)
